Lady Raiders place a beating on NWAAC rivals

The sun was out making it a great day for a ballgame. The lady Raiders pulled out two nice victories against rival Green River CC Gators.

The final scores were 8 to 0 for the first game and 14 to 0 the second game. Pitching and defense was what stood out the most.

In game 1, Chantell Winter had another strong performance on the mound. She finished the day with 5 strikeouts and allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.

In the first inning, the Gators put pressure on Winter and the defense with an early scoring chance. With a runner on third, KC Routos snagged a hard line drive at third and quickly got the force out when the runner was off the base.

After the top of the first, the Raiders went to work. Becca Cable singled and stole second, and Ashley Denbrock walked and stole a base. Routos struck out but made it safely to first after the catcher dropped the ball.

With 2 outs, Aryn Knutsen hit a 2-RBI double to put the Raiders ahead. Melissa Ramos added another run with a base hit, but a runner was tagged out trying to advance on the play.

The Gators kept the Raiders in check for the next two innings. The bottom of the fourth inning Samantha Faust hit a rocket of a double to right-center scoring Shannon Reed, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Green River pitcher, Alexa Derrick fell apart in the fifth inning allowing 4 runs to come across and activate the mercy rule.

The game ended with 1 out in the bottom of the fifth with a final score of 8 to 0.

The second game of the evening had Katie Obrien taking the mound. Although she was not as overpowering as Winter was in game 1, Obrien never backed down against her opponents. Obrien had many good pitches being called balls on her, but she kept her composure and made sure not to just lay one in there against the Gators.

Obrien’s final line was 2 strikeouts and allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.

Game 2 was highlighted by offense with the final score being 14 to 0, but it was the defense of the lady Raiders that stood out.

Three double-plays were turned in the game with Routos starting two of them. With runners on first and second, Routos smoothly handled a sharp groundball and turned a 5 to 3 double-play (that’s third to first).

Faust, behind the plate for both games, caught a short popup and threw a bullet to second for the second final out when the runner wondered too far off the bag.

The bottom of the second inning had Faust lead off with a single and Poole getting beaned in the leg. After two quick outs, Routos and Reed came up big with 2-out hits to score 3 runs in the inning.

The Raiders poured on 8 more runs to push the lead and final score to 14 to 0.

Player Highlights:

Shannon Reed: 3-6, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, and 1 walk

Samantha Faust: 3-5, double, 3 RBI, and 1 walk

Aryn Knutsen: 3-6, triple, 4 RBI, and 1 walk
