Puyallup campus President Patrick Schmitt sent an e-mail to Pierce College employees on April 18 proposing a campus-wide or district-wide read.

His invitation for book suggestions was met with an enormous and excited response from staff. E-mails were filled with dozens of book suggestions and excited discussions from staff.

Schmitt said in his e-mail response about the district read that the response was “wholly unexpected,” and he was even surprised to be getting stopped in the halls to talk about it.

Schmitt is forming a planning group to work over the summer to plan the district read and activities for it throughout the academic school year. Schmitt is also involving staff from the Puyallup and Fort Steilacoom campuses and the military in the district read.

Pierce leaders are truly uniting in this effort for a district read.

Many professors suggested books and participated in discussion, but one, Professor John Lucas, stood out when he showed much support via email for the district read.

“I have been thrilled to read all of the enthusiastic suggestions for what book we would like to select. In addition, the response to Patrick’s suggestion show that there is a deep interest in further developing the intellectual life of the college,” Lucas said in his e-mail.
