At the beginning of winter quarter, Puyallup campus President Patrick Schmitt announced to the college community that he’d been named a finalist for president at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla.
Although he didn’t receive the position of president at Brevard, Schmitt is continuing to apply to other colleges in areas with warmer, sunnier climates. His decision to relocate is due to his fiancée’s Seasonal Affective Disorder caused by the lack of sunlight in the Pacific Northwest.
“You have to do what you have to do for the sake of your family,” Schmitt said.
Schmitt will continue working at Pierce College until he’s hired at another school. He has submitted other applications but has no immediate plans to relocate because the application process can take months.
“I pledge to you that until I do leave, I will continue to exercise vigorous, proactive leadership as the President of Pierce College Puyallup,” Schmitt said.
